Aussies make positive start as rain wreaks havoc
THE WOMEN’S Under 19 World Cup got underway over the weekend, but it was not a completely smooth start to the competition as rain interrupted a bunch of fixtures across the four groups.
UNDER 19 WORLD CUP RESULTS – DAYS ONE & TWO
GROUP A
Sri Lanka vs. Malaysia
Malaysia also did not have a tournament debut to remember, going down to Sri Lanka by 139 runs.
Sri Lanka made 6/162 from its 20 overs before bowling out the tournament hosts for just 23.
Dahami Sanethma set up the win for Sri Lanka with the bat, making 55, while Chamudi Praboda was the pick of the bowlers with a tally of three wickets.
India vs. West Indies
In what was the final match of the weekend, India got its title defence off to an excellent start, downing the West Indies by nine wickets in their opening match.
The Windies were bowled out for 44 before India breezed to the target in just the sixth over.
Parunika Sisodia was chief destroyer with the ball for India, finishing with 3/7, while Joshitha V J and Aayushi Shukla took a pair of wickets each.
GROUP B
England vs. Ireland
Unfortunately rain was the ultimate enemy in the clash between the fierce rivals England and Ireland, with their match ultimately abandoned.
Before the rain set in, though, England had made 7/144 from its 50 overs and Ireland then reached 2/28 from almost four overs in response.
Pakistan vs. United States
The beginning of the campaign for Pakistan and the United States had a bit of a false start, as their match was abandoned without a ball bowled.
GROUP C
Samoa vs. Nigeria
This fixture was another false start, with the tournament debutants made to wait for their first taste of World Cup action after rain saw the match abandoned without a ball bowled.
New Zealand vs. South Africa
The rain certainly tried its hardest to thwart New Zealand and South Africa from getting their tournaments underway, although their match was reduced to 11 overs per side.
South Africa made 7/92 from its 11 overs, before restricting the Kiwis to just 5/69 from theirs.
Kayla Reyneke and Monalisa Legodi took two wickets each for the victorious South Africans, while for New Zealand Ayaan Lambart took three wickets and Tash Wakelin took two.
GROUP D
Bangladesh vs. Nepal
Bangladesh handed Nepal a World Cup debut it would rather forget, winning by five wickets.
Nepal was bowled out for 52, before Bangladesh then reached that target part way through the 14th over.
It was a pretty even performance from Bangladesh to help set up the win, with Jammatul Maoua the only bowler to take more than one wicket.
Australia vs. Scotland
Australia got its tournament off to a perfect start, downing Scotland by nine wickets.
After bowling Scotland out for just 48, the Aussies then reached the target in the seventh over.
There was some very tight bowling from the Australians, with Caoimhe Bray taking 3/1, Eleanor Larosa taking 3/7, and Hasrat Gill taking 2/10.
