Group A splits in half with one round remaining

THERE may have only been two matches at the Under 19 World Cup yesterday, but both were crucial in setting up the final day of action in Group A.

In the earlier of the two fixtures, Sri Lanka picked up a huge win over the West Indies, to the tune of 81 runs.

Sri Lanka first set a commanding total of 5/166, before bowling its opponent out for 85 with two balls to spare. One thing that did not help the West Indies was the fact that the side bowled 20 wides in a total extras tally of 36.

Chamudi Praboda was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with three wickets, while Aseni Thalagune and Limansa Thilakaratne took a pair of wickets each. Meanwhile, Selena Ross picked up two scalps for the West Indies.

In the latter of the two matches, India did not take too long to dispose of hosts Malaysia.

After bowling out the Malaysians for just 31, India then reached that target on the penultimate ball of the third over.

Vaishnavi Sharma was chief destroyer with the ball for the reigning champions, taking the very impressive figures of 5/5 from four overs, which included a maiden over. Aayushi Shukla also had a great day with ball in hand, taking a trio of wickets.

These results mean that on the final day of action in this group, whoever wins the match between Malaysia and the West Indies will progress to the Super Sixes stage, while India and Sri Lanka are both already safely through.
