Result still achieved despite rain, Test Squad announced
AFTER retaining the Ashes last match, the Australians have outright won the 2025 Women’s Ashes after winning the second T20 last night in what was a dramatic match at times.
Australia first posted the very competitive tally of 5/185.
Much like the first T20, the Australians jumped out of the gates, going at almost 10 runs an over before losing their first wicket at the end of the fifth over.
There was a bit of a wobble in the middle of the innings when momentum slowed down, but then there was an acceleration at the end of the innings, with Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris putting on a 71 partnership off the last almost six overs.
McGrath ultimately went on to top score with 48 not out off just 35 balls, while earlier in the innings Beth Mooney made 44 off just 31 balls.
Meanwhile for the English Charlie Dean took two wickets and was the only bowler to pick up more than one wicket.
Then in the second innings is where the drama really reared its head.
After eight overs and four balls of the ninth over, England were 1/69, two runs about the DLS par score.
Then, the rain hit.
Once play was able to return to the field, England made a good fight of the chase, but eventually kept slipping further and further behind the DLS par score. This was important because just in the final over, one ball got bowled before rain struck and play was suspended again. By this point England were 4/168, but the DLS par score was 174.
As the rain really set in, the game was ultimately called off with five balls left in the match, and because England was behind on the DLS par score, Australia was handed a six run win.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge was the best of the English batters, smashing 52 off just 40 balls. Heather Knight was even quicker, blasting 43 not out from just 19 balls.
Megan Schutt meanwhile was the best of the Aussie bowlers, as she was the only one to pick up more than one wicket.
During last night’s match the Australian squad for next week’s Ashes Test was announced.
The squad included captain Alyssa Healy and star spinner Ash Gardner, who are both under injury clouds, as well as Georgia Voll, who has kept her spot in the squad from the limited over matches into the Test Match squad.
