THIS week the 2025 edition of the Indian Women’s Premier League (IWPL) kicks off, and ahead of the tournament Rookie Me Central will take a look at each squad to highlight a bunch of key players to look out for.
Today’s edition features the Gujarat Giants.
Last season was not exactly easy for those in orange. After a lot of list changes in the offseason, wins were hard to come by for the Giants and they only registered two for the 2024 season, good enough only for a bottom place finish.
The Giants’ list might not be stacked with the big names in the same way some of the other sides are, but there is still plenty of star factor amongst the squad.
From an international perspective, unsurprisingly most of Gujarat’s international spots are occupied by Australians. Led by coach Michael Klinger, another Australian, the Giants will look to cash in on the national team’s long-time dominance.
Ash Gardner will captain the side this year, and off the back of an Ashes series where spin dominated for a large part of the series, the thought of the typically spin friendly Indian pitches that await her would be music to her ears. She is also a weapon with bat in hand.
Speaking of strong batters, Laura Wolvaardt, Phoebe Litchfield and Beth Mooney are all back in orange again this season.
Interestingly, Mooney is also once again the only wicketkeeper in the squad, but she has had a recent tune up of her glovework having taking them up during the Ashes.
When it comes to the Indians on the list, the strength is in the bowlers.
Harleen Deol, Tanuja Kanwer, Meghna Singh and Priya Mishra are all on the Giants list, and will be the key ones to watch when it comes to trying to get cheap wickets.
