Delhi secures last ball WIPL victory

A MATCH-WINNING two runs on the final ball of the day helped Delhi Capitals secure a two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the second match of the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) overnight. While the opening match was a nail-biter, the second contest in the 2025 season proved even better with Arundhati Reddy smacking the winning runs just in the knick of time.

Mumbai Indians put up a total of 164 from 19.1 innings batting first, before the Capitals a slight collapse of 4-16 after a 60-run opening partnership to finish at 8-165. They only just made it though, with Player of the Match Niki Prasad dismissed on the penultimate ball. It meant it was now or never for Reddy who needed two runs or more for victory.

Her final shot went for the required two, but it was not without controversy as Mumbai claimed a run out. Reviewing the footage, Reddy was declared safe in her crease, and Delhi was awarded the two-wicket win over the last ball.

The Capitals won the toss and sent the Indians in to bat first. It looked a masterstoke early when Hayley Matthews was caught by Meg Lanning off Shikha Pandey‘s bowling. But soon enough, Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur changed the direction of the innings, piling on 73 runs in six and a half overs.

Unfortunately though for the Indians the wickets kept tumbling as the innings progressed and the scoring started to slow back down again, and they were ultimately bowled out for 164 on the first ball of the final over of their innings.

Unsurprisingly it was Sciver-Brunt and Kaur who top scored for the Indians, making 80 not out and 42 respectively.

On the other side of the equation Annabel Sutherland took three wickets and followed in the footsteps of her Australian team mates from the night before in leading the wicket taking charge. Pandey also took two wickets.

Earlier in the innings Shafali Verma got the innings off to a solid start with 43 off just 18 balls, while on the other side of the equation a couple of big names in Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr were the pick of Mumbai’s bowlers with a pair of wickets each.
