Priest and Villani to the rescue as the Tigers roar again

TASMANIA continued its strong run in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), defeating the ACT Meteors by 19 runs on Wednesday.

The Tigers batted first in Canberra, and after her game high knock against the Western Australians, Emma Manix-Geeves wasn’t able to repeat her performance this time around and fell cheaply.

Things then steadied as Rachel Priest and Elyse Villani turned the innings around and put on a 152-run stand in their second wicket partnership.

No one was quite able to reach that same kind of partnership for the rest of the Tasmanian innings, but it didn’t matter.

Although they almost ran out of wickets, the visitors ultimately posted a very competitive 7/241 off their 50 overs.

Unsurprisingly, it was Priest and Villani who were the top scorers for the Tassie side. Priest made 110 while Villani made 78.

Meanwhile for the Meteors, Carly Leeson took 3/43 off her 10 overs, while Zoe Cooke took 2/39 off her eight overs.

The ACT response got off to almost the worst possible start, when Erica Kershaw was bowled for one to leave the Meteors at 1/1 in only the second over.

Katie Mack and Rebecca Carter then steadied and put on an 80-run stand, but then the middle order collapse came and the Meteors found themselves at 6/120 in only the 30th over.

Things never really recovered from there, and the hill to reach the target was ultimately too high to climb for the Meteors. They were bowled out for 222 with 11 balls left in their innings.

Mack was really the linchpin of the innings, and without her 53 things would have been even tougher for ACT. Meanwhile for the Tigers, the wicket taking duties were well spread amongst the bowlers. Molly Strano, Sarah Coyte and Amy Smith all picked up two poles.

Neither team has too long to wait for their next clash. The Tasmanians are back at it tomorrow against South Australia, while the Meteors are up against Queensland on Sunday.
