Super Over thriller not super for Aussies
IT took until December, but finally Australia has been beaten in 2022 in the T20 format, losing to India in a Super Over thriller overnight.
India sent the Aussies into bat, and despite the Aussies getting off to a flying start the Indians were able to strike early, removing Alyssa Healy in only the fourth over.
However, that would be the last wicket-taking success the Indians would have, as Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath put on a 158 run partnership to take the Aussie total to 1/187 from their 20 overs.
Mooney finished on 82 not out, while McGrath finished on 70 not out.
Meanwhile for the Indians Deepti Sharma was the only one who broke through on the wicket taking front.
In reply, the Indians got off to a much better start, with their opening partnership lasting almost nine overs and was 76 runs.
They kept losing wickets, but a 61 run third wicket partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur was the turning point for the Indians, and combined with 10 extras from Australia’s bowlers ensured that India too finished on 187 after their 20 overs.
Mandhana was the linchpin of the Indian innings, making 79.
Meanwhile from an Australian bowling perspective, debutant Heather Graham finished with 3/22 off her four overs, while Alana King and Annabel Sutherland each picking up one wicket.
With the teams unable to be split, they were off to a Super Over.
The Indians were up first, and after losing a wicket on the second ball, Mandhana and Kaur went bang and ensured the Indians finished on 1/20 off their over.
In reply, the Australians lost a wicket one ball later, but Healy and McGrath were unable to match the levels of the Indians the over before, falling five runs short of their target.
Game 3 sees the series move to a different stadium in Mumbai, and is set to take place on Thursday morning Australian time.
