It’s time to Dool! Spinner stars in Hurricanes win

HOBART Hurricanes tweaker Paddy Dooley has left the Perth Scorchers in a spin, claiming four crucial wickets to inspire his side to its first win of the new Big Bash League (BBL) season. In just his third BBL outing, Dooley produced a definitive set of six in the 16th over, removing set batter Josh Inglis (62 off 37) and having Ashton Agar stumped for no score to turn the tide in Hobart’s favour.

Leading into Dooley’s match-winning over, the Scorchers required 36 runs off 30 balls at UTAS Stadium, chasing the home side’s 8-172. The consecutive strikes proved a massive momentum shifter, and though the Scorchers whittled the requirement down to 14 off the final over, they ultimately fell eight runs short.

It was Hobart who won the toss and elected to bat on its home deck, only to see opener Ben McDermott caught in front by Jason Behrendorff with the very first ball of the innings. It mattered little when skipper Matthew Wade (51 off 29) got going, combining with D’Arcy Short (35 off 25) to spark a fast start.

After a middle order collapse saw them lose 6-26 in four overs, the Hurricanes’ batting effort was bookended strongly by Tim David. The Aussie international absorbed a bit of pressure before freeing up towards the death, notching an unbeaten 46 off just 28 balls to set up Hobart’s highly defendable total.

Scorchers paceman Jhye Richardson recovered from conceding 10 off his opening over to end up with terrific figures of 3-26, while Aaron Hardie chimed in with 2-10 off his two sets of six. Andrew Tye also played his part, claiming the key wickets of Wade and Short despite leaking 45 runs.

In reply, Perth’s imported opening pair poured on 44 runs in the powerplay, but both were dismissed consecutively as Inglis came in to prop up the middle order. It was Dooley who sent dangerman Faf du Plessis (32 off 16) packing, with his overall effort of 4-16 worthy of player of the match honours. Nathan Ellis saw out the final over and claimed Richardson’s wicket with the last ball of the night.

Both teams sit in the mid-table bracket with one win each from their two respective games. The win breaks a five-game losing streak against Perth for Hobart, and the Hurricanes will next be in action on Thursday against the Sydney Sixers. The Scorchers will look to bounce back on Friday against the Melbourne Stars.
