Sixers whether Hurricanes to get off the mark

THE SYDNEY Sixers notched their first win of BBL|12 on Thursday night, weathering the Hobart Hurricanes in a rain-affected clash at the SCG. With the six-run victory in 14 overs apiece, the home side moves out of bottom spot on the Big Bash ladder.

Sydney won the toss and elected to bat first on an inconsistent pitch, which was made less dramatic as the ball dampened. Openers Josh Philippe (43) and Kurtis Patterson (38) put together a definitive 68-run opening stand in just under seven overs, with the former named player of the match.

Philippe whacked four boundaries and one maximum en route to his match-best tally, which helped bookend the Sixers’ total. After a batting collapse which yielded 4-2 in the space of seven deliveries, Hayden Kerr chimed in with 32 to steer his side to 5-137 alongside an unbeaten James Vince (19).

Among the collapse, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, and Dan Christian were all dismissed without scoring. Shadab Khan (2-32), who had earlier dropped Philippe on 20, nabbed both him and Henriques consecutively, making up for the previous blunder with an excellent diving effort.

Fellow tweaker Paddy Dooley joined the party, removing Silk first ball in the batter’s 100th BBL game as part of his 2-19 figures. Nonetheless, the Sixers put up a highly defendable total in the shortened format, and went on to prove as much.

The entire Hobart Hurricanes’ top four managed starts but were dismissed in the teens, with the likes of Ben McDermott (17) and skipper Matthew Wade (15) frustratingly removed. Tim David looked like being his side’s final hope with 64 required off 20, but he could only manage eight off nine balls.

Enter Asif Ali (41 off 13), who took to the improbable task with aplomb, blasting five consecutive boundaries across the last two overs in what ended up being a consolation knock. He ended up caught by Silk off Naveen ul-Haq (1-36) with four balls remaining, and the Sixers had just enough on the board.

The Hurricanes will look to bounce back on Christmas Eve as they head back home to take on the unbeaten Melbourne Renegades, while the Sixers will hope to form a winning run when they take on the other half of Melbourne on Boxing Day.
