U19 World Cup Day 3 Wrap: Surprises dry up but ladders settle
DAY 3 at the 2023 Under 19 World Cup saw less surprise results than the first two, but with Group A and D playing their second games, their respective ladders are starting to settle and pecking order being determined.
Group A
Bangladesh win second game to remain top
In what is proving to be the surprise packets of the tournament thus far, Bangladesh has won its second game in a row to remain top of the Group A standings.
After Bangladesh posted a very competitive 2/165 off their 20 overs, Sri Lanka got close but could not quite reach the target, falling 10 runs short.
Afia Prottasha (53) and Shorna Akter (50 not out) were the stars with the bat for the Bangladeshis, while Marufa Akter picked up two wickets.
Meanwhile not even a 61 from Vishmi Gunarathne and a 55 from Dewmi Vihanga Wijerathne was not enough to get the Sri Lankans over the line.
Australia bounce back with win over USA
After a disappointing first up loss, the Australians bounced back emphatically with a big nine wicket win over the USA.
After bowling the Americans out in 15 and a half overs, the Aussies did not even need nine overs to reach the target, only losing one wicket in the process.
The hard work of the likes of Maggie Clark (two wickets) ensured the Aussie batters did not have much to do.
Group D
India makes it two from two with dominant win
India remains undefeated after two games with a commanding 122 run win over the UAE.
After posting a whopping 3/219 off their 20 overs, the Indians restricted the UAE to just 5/97 off their 20 overs.
Shafali Verma (78) and Shweta Sehrawat (74 not out) really got the innings off to a perfect start for the Indians, while Richa Ghosh (49) also had a good day with the bat.
South Africa bounce back to get on the board
After a first up loss, South Africa bounced back overnight with a 44 run win over Scotland.
The South Africans posted 7/112 from their 20 overs, but then the Scots kept losing too many wickets and were ultimately bowled out for 68 with three overs to go.
Kayla Reyneke made a solid 53 for the tournament hosts, while Madison Landsman took four wickets and Seshnie Naidu and Jemma Botha both took two. Three of Landsman’s wickets were a hattrick.
Meanwhile for Scotland Katherine Fraser took two wickets while Niamh Robertson-Jack took two.
