IRELAND have ended its T20 World Cup campaign on the losing end of the Duckworth Lewis System, going down to India by five runs.

India won the toss and chose to bat first, and made 6/155 from its 20 overs.

A 62 run opening stance between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana really set the tone for what was to come from the Indians, and despite losing two wickets in as many balls in both the 16th and 18th overs, it did not matter as the Indians went on to make the competitive tally they did.

Mandhana was the pinnacle of the Indian batters, making 87 from only 56 balls.

Meanwhile for Ireland, Laura Delany was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Orla Prendergast picked up two and Arlene Kelly picked up the other one.

After a bad opening over which saw it lose two wickets in the space of the over, Ireland made a productive start to its chase making 2/44 from its powerplay.

Then the old enemy started to pour in Gqeberha and that ultimately spelled disaster for the Irish.

They were five runs behind on the Duckworth-Lewis System and because more than five overs had been played, there was going to be a result called even if they could not return to play.

Unfortunately for the Irish they were unable to return after only playing 8.2 overs of their batting innings, finishing stranded on 2/54.

Gabby Lewis was on 32 not out while Delany was on 17 not out.

Renuka Singh Thakur picked up one of the wickets, while Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh combined for a run out for the second wicket.

Although the result confides Ireland to a winless return to the World Cup, it does confirm India’s place in the semi no matter what happens in tonight’s match between England and Pakistan.
