Mumbai’s undefeated run rolls on

MUMBAI Indians remain the only undefeated team and the team to beat in the 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season after they defeated the UP Warriorz by eight wickets overnight.

After the UP Warriorz posted 6/159 from their 20 overs, Mumbai reached the target with 15 balls to spare. The UP Warriorz’s innings was defined by one partnership, and unsurprisingly two Aussies were at the centre of it.

Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath put together a 132-run partnership for the third wicket to really kick-start the innings. It also proved crucial to the Warriorz posting somewhat of a competitive tally, because the next highest partnership was 10 runs. Also unsurprisingly it was the Aussie pair who top scored for the Warriorz. Healy made 48 while McGrath was not too far behind on 50.

For the Indians it was an Indian who continues to make a name for herself in the tournament that was the pick of the bowlers. Saika Ishaque took three wickets from her four overs, while Amelia Kerr (two wickets) and Hayley Matthews (one wicket) were the other wicket takers for Mumbai.

In reply, Mumbai made a productive start to its chase, putting on 58 inside seven overs for the first wicket, but the did not put on another run before losing another wicket four balls later. It did not matter in the end as Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt put on a 106 run partnership to get the Indians home. Kaur finished unbeaten on 53, while Sciver-Brunt also finished unbeaten on 45. Earlier Yastika Bhatia helped get the innings off to a great start with a 27 ball, 42 run innings.

The Indians get a 48-hour break before their next match, which is against Gujarat on Wednesday Australian time. The Warriorz get an extra day’s break before they have to tackle their next opponent the Royal Challengers.
