Mumbai still the team to beat as Giant winning run continues
MUMBAI remains undefeated and the team to beat in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) season, after defeating Gujarat by 55 runs overnight.
After posting 8/162 from their 20 overs, the Indians were able to restrict the Giants to only 9/107 from their 20 overs.
The Indians’ batting innings got off to a bit of a disastrous start, losing their first wicket on the fourth ball of their innings with only one run on the board.
However Natalie Sciver-Brunt (36 runs) and Yastika Bhatia (44 runs) turned that around with a 74-run second wicket stand to get the innings back on track.
Later, Harmanpreet Kaur smashed 51 from only 31 balls to really get Mumbai’s innings going. She smashed seven fours and two sixes in a top scoring performance.
Things fell apart a little towards the back end of the innings, but the earlier batters had done enough work to put a competitive tally on the board.
Meanwhile for the Giants, Ash Gardner was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Kim Garth, Sneh Rana and Tanuja Kanwar all picked up one dismissal each.
Gujarat’s innings got off to an even worse start than Mumbai’s, losing the first wicket on the first ball of their innings.
It was a sign of things to come for the Giants as they lost wickets too regularly to get any of partnership together.
Only four batters made a double figure score, with Harleen Deol’s 22 the best of the bunch.
Meanwhile for the victorious Indians, Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews both picked up three wickets, while Amelia Kerr picked up two of them.
Both teams have a couple of days break before their next clashes.
Gujarat has to take on the other competition front runner Delhi on Friday morning Australian time, while Mumbai has an extra day’s break before it battles the UP Warriorz.
