SYDNEY Thunder have gone to the top of the WBBL table with an eight-run win over the Brisbane Heat yesterday. After the Thunder made a whopping 4/204 from their 20 overs, the Heat fell agonisingly short to record just their second loss of this campaign.

The Thunder’s monster innings all started with openers Tahlia Wilson and Chamari Athapaththu, who posted a 102-run opening partnership. Wilson and Heather Knight gave the innings a second wind later in the innings, posting a 70-run third wicket partnership.

The Thunder’s tally really was not really due to wayward bowling either, with the Heat only conceding six extras. Four of those extras were wides.

Wilson ultimately made 83 not out, while Athapaththu made 58. Meanwhile the only wicket takers for the Heat were Nicola Hancock and Courtney Sippel, who took two wickets each.

The Heat started much slower with bat in hand than the Thunder had, already two wickets down before they had even reached 60 runs on the board.

Although the Heat were able to put together some solid partnerships at the back end of their innings they were not to the scale of the Thunders. They also even had a bit of a boost from some wayward bowling, with five wides and two no balls in a final extras tally of nine.

Mignon du Preez starred with bat in hand for the visitors, making 61.

Meanwhile for the Thunder although she was the most expensive Hannah Darlington was also the highest wicket taker for her team, picking up two wickets. Marizanne Kapp and Sammy-Jo Johnson also picked up one wicket each.

The Thunder now have a few days break before a reverse fixture against the Stars, while the Heat have one less day before a reverse fixture against the Scorchers.
