Thrillers add extra spice to WBBL season

YESTERDAY’s action in the WBBL saw important but nail biting wins to both the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers, as the back end of the WBBL season really starts to heat up.

Sixers win thriller to keep finals hopes alive

The Sixers defeated the Brisbane Heat by six wickets in a thriller to keep their hopes of a finals berth alive. After the Heat made 7/176 from their 20 overs, the Sixers reached the target with one ball to spare in their innings.

The Heat had plenty of stumbles early in their innings, but once Amelia Kerr and Mignon du Preez got to the crease things started to get going. Kerr made 64 and du Preez made 42 to really push the score forward.

On the flipside, Ellyse Perry was the star with the ball for those in magenta, picking up three wickets, while Jess Kerr picked up two wickets, but neither of them were sister Amelia.

In reply no one from the Sixers made a huge score, but everyone made solid enough scores to get the job done. The Heat conceding 11 extras did certainly help though. Top scorers for the Sixers were Ash Gardner and Erin Burns with 36 and 35 respectively.

Meanwhile, Georgia Voll and Jess Jonassen were the wicket takers for the Heat, picking up two each.

Strikers hold on in thriller to head to the top

The Adelaide Strikers have moved to the top of the WBBL ladder after a thrilling three run win over the Sydney Thunder. After the Strikers only posted 7/121, the Thunder fell agonisingly short, only making 7/118.

Laura Wolvaardt was the true hero for the Strikers with the bat, with her 70 not out ensuring they had somewhat of a target to defend. She was also one of only three batters to make a double digit score for the visitors.

Meanwhile for the Thunder the wicket taking duties were shared pretty evenly, with only two bowlers that were used not picking up a wicket and Marizanne Kapp being the only multiple wicket taker with two to her name.

In reply the Thunder found themselves at 2/4 halfway through the second over, and that bad start ultimately cost them the win. The pick of the batters was actually Tahlia Wilson down at number six, who made 33.

Meanwhile for the Strikers their bowlers also evenly shared the wicket taking duties, but Megan Schutt and Anesu Mushangwe were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each.
