ALTHOUGH the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season is over, there is still plenty of analysis to be done. The first area of the court that we will delve into is the shooting circle, discussing the league’s most prolific and accurate shooters while also assessing who did the most damage from the super shot range.
GOAL SHOOTERs:
It is hard to go past Jhaniele Fowler with the West Coast Fever goaler a key cog in their rise up the ladder and subsequent grand final assault. Standing at 196cm the Jamaican shooter was a real threat under the post and led all comers credit to her staggering 965 goals. She was quite simply unstoppable, able to reel the ball in time and time again and most importantly did it at an incredibly high accuracy of 94 per cent. The next closest was Romelda Aiken with the Queensland Firebirds goal shooter rekindling her dominance under the post to make opposition teams pay, nailing 583 goals. Aiken was as consistent as they come under the post for the Firebirds, putting the yips to bed and delivering to guide her side in attack, although it was at a lesser accuracy of 85 per cent.
Sam Wallace also starred throughout the 2020 season leading the Swifts shooting end with 522 goals from her 591 attempts while up and coming youngster Cara Koenen flexed her shooting prowess to take out the title of the fourth most prolific goaler of the season with 491 goals at 89 per cent. In her first full SSN season, Lenize Potgieter made no mistake under the post for the Thunderbirds sinking 437 goals while Mwai Kumwenda was solid for the Vixens, converting 430 goals in the rotating circle. Magpies shooter Shimona Nelson kicked it up a gear with her accuracy first and foremost sitting at 90 per cent and amassing 411 goals for the season. Jo Harten, although down on her usual accuracy and output, was still a formidable threat for the GIANTS finishing with 317 goals at an overall accuracy of 78 per cent while despite only limited court time for the Lightning Peace Proscovia still managed to have her desired effect with 134 goals.
GOAL ATTACKS:
With prolific goal shooters across the league there were a number of goal attacks who also stepped up to the plate and delivered. The recently retired Caitlin Thwaites spent most of her season out in goal attack sinking 290 goals throughout the course of their campaign at an impressive 86 per cent while partner in crime Tegan Philip was also a solid option for the Vixens nailing 190 goals albeit at a lower 78 per cent. Versatile GIANTS goaler Kiera Austin was a handy option, nailing 252 goals while also amassing 153 goal assists. Lightning goal attack Steph Wood put up a steady stream of goals right throughout the season collecting 236 goals along with an impressive 222 goal assists, often providing that calming and experienced head in the goal circle.
In her debut SSN season, Tippah Dwan showcased her class, long range shooting and composure with ball in hand to sink 184 goals across the season. Fellow youngster and debutant Georgie Horjus also proved to have a hot hand managing 174 goals with her innate timing and clever drive allowing her to find a wealth of space inside the circle and convert at an average of 72 per cent. Donning the lowest number of goals by any goal attack, Alice Teague-Neeld finished the season with 104 goals to her name but boasted the highest number of goal assists with 321 credit to her work out the front to deliver into Fowler.
SUPER SHOT:
The introduction of the super shot definitely played into the hands of Harten with the GIANTS goaler leading the way thanks to her 78 two-point shots. Sinclair proved to be to be the go-to girl throughout the two-point period for Collingwood walking away with 57 for the year while Wood was renowned for her long bomb shooting with 56 super shots. Dwan also starred from down town nailing 46 super shots of her own for the Firebirds. Diversifying her game in the 2020 season, Wallace proved she is just as damaging from the outskirts as she is from underneath the post, nailing 46 super shots at 56 per cent.
