NOW that the ANZ Premiership season has come to a close Draft Central takes a look back at some of the quiet achievers that effectively plied their trade throughout the year. Making her way in at number eight is premiership player Filda Vui.

The Northern Mystics goal attack spent her fair share of time behind Silver Ferns goaler Bailey Mes, but when she got her time to shine, she did just that with her vision and playmaking a couple of crucial elements in her repertoire. Often flying under the radar, Vui was able to make waves each time she entered the contest for the Mystics and provided a point of difference to an otherwise predictable but effective frontend for the premiership winning side. Vui proved time and time again that she could be both an impact player, able to come on at any given time, or a member of the starting seven and not skip a beat such are her smarts and capacity to build into a game. She did not need long to adapt her game, immersing herself into the thick of things within the blink of an eye and kept things ticking along nicely for the Mystics.

The most exciting thing for Mystics fans was Vui’s desire and willingness to go to post despite having the services of tall timber Grace Nweke. Vui showcased her star power and arsenal of tricks to demand the attention of the defenders which further added to the Mystics’ dominance. The 25-year-old grew with confidence each time she stepped out on court using her dodges and hard drives into the circle to open up the space. She highlighted her versatility to play both a feeding and shooting role credit to her confidence to release the ball from distance into Nweke or take the game on herself and shoot from range. Vui refused to give up an inch of space and consistently used her turn of speed to break free in attack to create space. The shooter to shooter interplay between Nweke and Vui was just about unstoppable with the pair able to spot one another and dish off a pinpoint pass.

The goal attack impressed with her connections with playmaker Peta Toeava with the pair able to balance the flow in attack and carefully craft the ball down the court. Vui was not afraid to sit back when she needed to but also dazzled with her dare and smarts to break the game open. She oozed a sense of composure and calmness each time she entered the fray and used her netball IQ to think her way through the defensive pressure. Towards the backend of the season, Vui registered more game time and displayed her capacity to have a profound impact with her read of the play and clever attacking movements to keep the defence on their toes.

Playing alongside the shooting machine that is Nweke, Vui still managed to register 70 goals from 87 attempts to convert at 81 per cent across the season. She also picked up four deflections, 11 pickups and 42 feeds despite only taking the court 11 times.
