2021 SSN signing update: 7/10

THE Queensland Firebirds have just one signing left to announce with one day remaining of the Suncorp Super Netball free agency period, after confirming on Wednesday evening that Jemma Mi Mi will return to the fray in 2022. The crafty wing attack is a versatile figure in the Firebirds midcourt, using her speed to impact in wing attack but also able to provide a calm head in transition through the centre.

Head coach Megan Anderson says she is excited to announce the return of Mi Mi, who is the only current indigenous player in the SSN system, with the 25-year-old’s best netball still to come.

“Jem is such a naturally gifted athlete and netballer,” Anderson said. “She has silky smooth skills, her feed into the circle is brilliant and I’m constantly in awe of her footwork and the way she bamboozles her defenders.

“Jem’s 2021 season was a bit disrupted by injury so I’m expecting big things from her in 2022, after a solid pre-season.”

The wing attack is known for her great footwork, smarts and hard working mentality, and has continuously stepped up to the plate in the Firebirds attack over the past five seasons, rarely outrun on a lead. While her 2021 season ended prematurely due to injury – though fortunately not as bad as initially suspected – Mi Mi said she is excited about the new-look playing group the Firebirds have curated for the 2022 season.

“I’m so excited to be back in the purple dress for the 2022 season,” Mi Mi said. “I hope to still be a role model to young Indigenous kids out there who love sport and one day want to play at the elite level.

“We’ve got an incredible playing group and I can’t wait to show everyone what we are capable of next season.”

All seven other remaining SSN clubs have named their 2022 squads, with the SSN free agency period set to conclude tomorrow. The open-ended training partner signing period commences on Saturday, October 9.
