ROUND 3 of the Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) saw a number of players impress and showcase that the they are raring to go after their year long hiatus from netball. With newcomers aplenty and some familiar faces once again taking the court Draft Central takes a look at some of the top performers and which players have already dominated certain statistical areas.
Goals:
After another strong outing under the post, Mary Cholhok has continued to keep her season tally ticking along nicely for Loughborough Lightning taking her total up to 114 goals in three appearances. A composed figure inside the goal circle Cholhok, uses her body positioning to command the ball and most importantly score at a high volume. The highly reliable Rachel Dunn continued to add to her season tally this round for Wasps using her timing and netball nous to float into the circle and get into damaging scoring positions to take her season total to 84 goals. Surrey Storm goal shooter Karyn Bailey climbed up the ladder when it came to top performers to secure second spot in the league for number of goals with 82 while Kim Borger impressed for Team Bath with her strong holds under the post and volume of shots as shown through her 76 goals.
Shooting accuracy:
Despite being out with injury and likely to be sidelined for the next couple of rounds, Donnell Wallam still holds the mantle for the most accurate shooter in the competition going at 97 per cent. Hot on her heels is Severn Stars goaler Georgia Rowe who has managed 46 of her 48 attempts sitting at 96 per cent while Manchester Thunder lynchpin Joyce Mvula has showcased her accuracy to post only missing two of her 47 attempts to boast a 96 per cent accuracy. Team Bath goal attack, Sophie Drakeford-Lewis continued her dominance to post only missing a mere three goals in her three appearances so far sitting at 95 per cent. London Pulse spearhead Sigi Burger was down on her usual output but her accuracy did not waiver converting at 94 per cent.
Intercepts:
Although they did not get the win they were after, Saracens Mavericks defender Razia Quashie impressed down back with her ability to pick off passes and get into the right spot at the right time. She leads the competition with 12 intercepts so far while Vicki Oyesola is continuing her merry way for Leeds with 11 intercepts to her name constantly displaying her ball winning ways. Wasps goal defence, Fran Williams is never far from the action with the defender able to shut down space with ease and most importantly take those flashy intercepts as she moves to 10 for the season. After a strong performance in Round 3 Alice Harvey worked her way up the competition ladder for intercepts with the Loughborough Lightning defender sitting on eight for the season while London Pulse defender Halimat Adio continues to ply her trade down back and get hands to ball with six intercepts for the season.
Deflections:
Quashie once again features highly in this statistic with 12 deflections testament to her read of the flight of the ball and timing to swat away passes while Lucy Herdman is proving to be a threat down back taking her season tally to 10 deflections. Surrey Storm livewire Leah Middleton has taken full advantage of her long arms and quick footwork moving to 10 deflections as Oyesola continues to pester attackers with her dogged style of defence as shown through her nine deflections. The other top five performer is Wasps stalwart Josie Huckle with the defender putting in the hard yards to disrupt play credit to her nine deflections for the season so far.
