A HUGE month of 2022 Suncorp Super Netball signing action is done and dusted, with all eight 10-player teams confirmed for the upcoming season and some intriguing changes amongst the ranks. It is time to run through each of the 2022 team lists, and next up is 2021 premiers, NSW Swifts.
The reigning premiers frankly had an excellent year in 2021, providing plenty of dash, dare and consistency throughout an impressive campaign. Not being the major frontrunner for much of the season worked in the Swifts’ favour, finishing off the season on the ultimate high and managing to retain all of their consistent starters for the upcoming season in the process. The loss of two time premiership squad-members Sophie Garbin and Lauren Moore has paved the way for a couple of NSW pathways talent to work their way into the ranks for 2022, while the acquisition of another former premiership midcourter further bolsters their ranks. It is safe to say the Swifts have recruited very nicely for the upcoming season and this time will look forward to being the hunted rather than the hunter, with a well-rounded playing group set to really test each of the other teams next year and get within reach of the silverware once more.
Newcomers:
Allie Smith (WD/C)
Moving up the coast from Victoria, Smith will bring another layer of versatility and consistency to the Swifts midcourt. Able to rotate through both wing defence and centre, Smith’s biggest assets are her defensive capability, competitiveness and relentlessness, constantly hunting for the turnover ball and providing a solid backup option across the court. Expect her to slot in well with the Swifts midcourt group.
Kelly Singleton (GA/GS)
A NSW junior who has followed the pathways to a tee, Singleton will step up from a training partner role to the 10-player Swifts squad in 2022 following a season of hard work and a high rate of development. A smooth-moving shooter who should slot in well amongst the attack group, Singleton has tried and true connections with much of the team already proving to be a huge sticking point for the developing prospect.
Teigan O’Shannassy (GK/GD)
O’Shannassy has been offered a second chance at the top level, elevated from a Swifts training partner to the main group. Her work rate and dynamic movement will be a great asset to the Swifts ranks, and while she has had a brief taste of SSN having earned a GIANTS contract for 2020, illness struck and put her opportunity to rest before it really started. Expect O’Shannassy to come out with something to prove.
