THE 2023/24 Australian Diamonds Squad has been revealed, which is also the initial squad from which the final 2023 World Cup squad will be selected.
19 players have initially been selected, with room for another three players to be added over the next year.
At the end of the 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season this squad will be whittled down to a squad of 15 for the World Cup, which includes travelling reserves.
The squad is largely the same one from 2022/23, but with one significant addition.
Adelaide Thunderbirds defender Matilda Garrett has been added to the squad after a strong start to the 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Garrett is not a total stranger to the national team set up after representing Australia in 2017 at the Netball Youth World Cup and was also in last year’s Australian Development Squad.
The notable absentee from last year’s squad is Maddy Turner, who misses out after not much game time for the national team over the last year.
Sasha Glasgow also misses out on selection after a strong start to the Suncorp Super Netball season, with speculation she may go and be selected by England instead, similar to what Elle McDonald did.
Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich spoke of how hard selecting a squad for a major tournament can be.
“Selection is incredibly difficult, but this squad has performed strongly, including success at last year’s Commonwealth Games,” Marinkovich said.
“Over the past two years we have seen growth in performance, both within the program and when competing against other nations.
“Matilda Garrett comes into the squad after demonstrating growth in areas that support Australia’s defensive style of play. Matilda is a tight one-on-one defender who maintains intensity and we look forward to seeing her develop in the Diamonds squad.”
