2023 NSL Season Preview: Strathclyde Sirens

THE 2023 Netball Super League (NSL) season is just around the corner, and clubs and fans alike are gearing up for another exciting season.

After an eventful off season the 10 NSL clubs are ready to go for another year, and to prepare for the season we here at Rookie Me Central are going to go around the league and take a look at where each of the clubs sit ahead of the new season.

Next up, it is time to head up to Scotland to check in with the Strathclyde Sirens.

It is safe to say that 2022 did not quite go to plan for the Sirens.

They only finished in eighth place, not living up to the preseason expectations of how things would go for the team from Glasgow.

But, 2023 is a brand new year and a chance for the Glaswegians to reset the trajectory.

The squad for 2023 is largely the same one that took to the court in 2022, but there have been a few big changes.

Arguably the biggest inclusion is Stella Oyella, who joins the shooting quartet. The Ugandan veteran becomes the third of her countrymen to join the NSL, and will provide a wealth of experience to the Sirens side.

She joins returning shooters Bethan Goodwin, Emma Barrie and Niamh McCall in the Sirens’ shooting arsenal.

Abigail Robson is the new midcourt face for the Sirens, after she crossed from Surrey in the offseason.

She will certainly be looking for some more game time this season, after having only made five appearances last season despite playing every game for Bath the year prior.

She joins the returning Beth Dix, Kelly Boyle and Claire Maxwell in the midfield brigade.

The final new face in the Sirens’ squad for 2023 is defender Natalie Bright.

Well, more like a returning face in Bright’s case, with the Aussie returning for a second stint at the side after previously playing for the team in 2020.

She joins Towera Vinkhumbo, Abby Tyrell and Emily Nicholl, who return to the Glaswegian side from last season.

With one player from each court area coming into the side, this obviously means one from each section has also left the club.

A big loss for the Sirens is Gia Abernethy, with the now former captain deciding to retire at the end of the 2022 season.

The other two departures are Sarah Macphail and Taylor McKevitt, who have left to go south to Severn and Manchester respectively.
