2023 SSN | Round 2 preview: Double derby delight
AFTER an entertaining opening round last weekend, Round 2 of the Suncorp Super Netball season is set to get underway tomorrow evening.
This weekend is full of state derbies with both Queensland and Victoria seeing cross-state rivalries take centre stage.
The Battle of the Bruce opens proceedings as the Sunshine Coast Lightning travel down to Brisbane to take on the Firebirds.
These two sides come into the clash in very different positions compared to their last derby encounter. The Lightning will arguably go into the match as favourites, but can the Firebirds will look to turn around a poor performance from last week and get their first win for the year on the board.
The second of tomorrow’s matches sees a similar situation when the Adelaide Thunderbirds take on the NSW Swifts.
Adelaide has proven to be a much improved side this season, while the Swifts were not so impressive in Round 1. Will the script flip, or is Adelaide the real deal this year?
Moving on to Sunday’s action and the first of the two matches sees the Fever travel east to take on the Giants. The Giants were a little lacklustre against the Lightning last week, but they were one of the only two sides to take down the Fever last year and with Jo Harten potentially back, that is only going to strengthen them. The Fever, however, are a dominant side and will be tough to beat.
The final game of the round is the Melbourne Derby, which sees the Vixens return home to tackle the Collingwood Magpies.
The Magpies are coming off a confidence boosting win over the Swifts last week, while the Vixens will be beyond frustrated they could not get over the line in the West last week against the Fever. Melbourne derbies always have a lot of spice to them, so expect nothing less this weekend.
