2023 SSN | Round 5 preview: One month down, what does that tell us?
FASTER than Verity Simmons down a netball court, we are already a month into the 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Like any season in any code, some teams have performed better than expected, others have not, while West Coast Fever are just being their all conquering selves.
But, even a month in already there are still plenty of things that are yet to be determined.
Which version of the Lightning is the true version? The one we saw in the first two rounds or the one we saw in the last fortnight? Are the Thunderbirds really going to be the most improved side this year even with what happened last week? Will last week’s win be the confidence booster the Vixens needed to really supercharge their season?
All those questions and more will be answered in the next 10 or so weeks, but for now let us look ahead to this weekend’s clashes.
This weekend’s action begins in Sydney with the GIANTS hosting the Magpies. Now both sides had confidence boosting wins last weekend, but who’s confidence boost will ultimately be more significant?
Two hours later it is off to Adelaide where the Thunderbirds are hosting the Vixens.
Now Adelaide will be demoralised after ending its undefeated run last week, and it comes up against a Vixens side who are coming off the kind of confidence boosting win they really needed. Will the Thunderbirds take the Vixens’ confidence back down a peg, or will the Vixens capitalise on a disappointed Thunderbirds and keep building on their confidence?
Onto Sunday’s action, and all the action is in the Sunshine State.
First up it is the Fever making arguably one of their longest trips of the season from west coast to east to take on the Firebirds.
This one has the potential to get ugly for the home side, but will they rally for club icon Gabi Simpson’s milestone match and snatch one of the unlikeliest of wins? Or will the Fever keep their unbeaten run alive?
The final match of the weekend sees the Sunshine Coast Lightning take on the NSW Swifts. Both these sides had similarly frustrating losses last week, so who will be able to bottle up that frustration from last week and use it to their advantage to take home the win this week?
