AFTER a solid tussle, the GIANTS have earned themselves another win with a 69 to 56 goal win over Collingwood.

In a match that was tight for much of the 60 minutes, the GIANTS’ strong back end of the third term and the final few minutes of the last term is what ultimately got them over the line.

Strong defensive pressure early from Collingwood allowed the Magpies to skip ahead to a three-goal lead before the GIANTS got their first on the board.

However, that lead did not last long as strong defensive pressure of their own from the GIANTS allowed them to shoot the next three to level up proceedings.

Although it remained goal for goal after that for much of the front half quarter, the Magpies were certainly having a harder time than the GIANTS were trying to navigate their opponent’s defence.

The GIANTS did sneak ahead just before the Power Five, but the Magpies were quick to level proceedings back up again.

Despite looking like she may go the whole quarter without putting up a shot, Sophie Garbin certainly made her first shot count with a successful Super Shot.

This helped start a bit of a late run from the Magpies, who almost took a three-goal lead into the first change, but a late Super Shot from Matisse Letherbarrow saw that lead sit at only one at quarter time.

The GIANTS were quick to eliminate the one-goal deficit and as such a period of tense goal-for-goal action ensued.

The visitors were then able to pick up some handy turnovers in defence and convert in attack to take a small lead, but just as the Power Five started the home side worked their way back to send it back to goal for goal.

However the GIANTS were not done for the quarter, and as such took a three-goal lead into the main break after a late run.

Initially, the third quarter started tight, but eventually, Collingwood did go on a run to level proceedings. But just as quickly as Collingwood had managed to level up again, the lead was back in the GIANTS hands. The GIANTS did not hold a very big lead though, so could hardly rest on their laurels.

But, thanks to a late burst the GIANTS were finally able to give themselves some breathing space and took a seven-goal lead into the final change.

The GIANTS maintained their lead early in the last quarter, but largely thanks to the defensive exploits of Ash Brazill, the Magpies slowly began to work their way back into the match. Just as the margin was heading towards double figures, suddenly it was back down to five goals.

Heading into the Power Five Period it was tense, and after Shimona Nelson landed a Super Shot things got that bit tenser.

However, Sophie Dwyer had other ideas and quickly countered with a Super Shot of her own to give the GIANTS that little bit more breathing space.

Even with prolific Super Shot shooter Kelly Singleton now on the court, time was quickly running out for Collingwood to come from behind and take the win.

Ultimately they did run out of time as the GIANTS skipped further ahead to take the win.

For the GIANTS Lauren Moore (four deflections, three gains, one rebound) had a solid game in defence, while Maddie Hay (34 feeds, 22 assists, three deflections, one intercept, one gain) was again prolific in midcourt.

Meanwhile for the Magpies Jodi-Ann Ward finished with a whopping eight gains alongside three intercepts, three rebounds and two deflections. Kelsey Browne (32 feeds, 22 assists) also had a really strong game.
