Head to Head: Constellation Cup – Diamonds v. Silver Ferns

WITH the first match of the 2019 Constellation Cup right around the corner, we check out a key match up on the court between netball’s two biggest rivals, Australia and New Zealand.

AUSTRALIAN DIAMONDS v. NEW ZEALAND SILVER FERNS

Courtney Bruce (GK) v. Maria Folau (GS)

Both players have shown they have what it takes at the highest level given their skill and general netball understanding, making for an interesting match-up. Courtney Bruce is a real barometer for the Diamonds while Maria Folau can tear games apart with her long bombs and slick movement.

The Aussie Diamonds goal keeper is no stranger to the big stage, able to pick off passes with her impressive timing, quick movement and good vision to get off the body of her opponent and impact the play further up the court. Bruce is influential in the defensive third with her long reach and strong defensive pressure able to force turnovers and block easy access into the circle. She is not afraid to back herself across the court and is renowned for her physicality under the post to body up on her opponents and create hesitation on the shot. Bruce pairs nicely with Jo Weston with the two rotating through the circle, while the goal keeper poses a dominant threat down back credit to her netball nous.

Folau oozes class and composure, able to rock back and sink the unthinkable shots right on the circle edge credit to her impressive skill and timing. She has proven time and time again that she can shoulder the load in attack, stepping up when required and commanding the ball from anywhere in the circle. Her movement under the post is second to none, effortlessly gliding along the baseline while her drives into the circle are hard to stop. Her quick hands on circle edge and connection with the likes of Laura Langman is imperative to the Silver Ferns front end. The versatile goaler is able to move out to goal attack when needed with her passing and endurance helping to stand up to the task, making her a real force to be reckoned with in the attacking third. Folau can adapt her game based on who she is paired with whether it be Ameliaranne Ekenasio, Bailey Mes or Maia Wilson, further highlighting her skill and versatility.

The Constellation Cup first match starts at 2pm on Sunday, with the game live on Channel 9.
