SSN Player focus: Jess Anstiss

WHILE the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) might be done and dusted for 2019, we will review a number of talented players who stepped up this year and take a look at just what they have to offer and how they can improve further.

West Coast Fever – Jess Anstiss

DOB: 20/11/1996
Height: 175cm
Position: WD/C

Season overview:

The wing defence had a relatively inconsistent year much like the rest of her team. She struggled to hit her straps but had moments of magic on the court taking a clever intercept or well timed deflection.

Assets:

Anstiss is arguably one of the most tenacious wing defences in the competition, unfazed by the physical nature of the game and instead embracing it. Her speed off the mark is a key feature of her game able to get her feet and body to the ball with ease while her read of the play is another key aspect of her game. She can switch between wing defence and centre, adding a touch of versatility to her repertoire. Although she has a predominantly defensive mindset she can find good space in the attacking third and hit the circle edge with pace and accuracy to feed into the shooters.

Improvements:

A key area of improvement for Anstiss would be her ability to stay in the game especially when matched up against quality opposition. She has plenty of talent but struggles in the big matches to bring it all to fruition and have an impact, often worn down by her opposition and leading to unnecessary penalties. With her tendency to fade in and out of games paired with her wavering defensive pressure she will be hoping to come back bigger and stronger next year to really stamp her authority on the competition.
