ROUND 11 marks the Super Sunday round with five games played with the Central Pulse, Mainland Tactix, Northern Mystics and Southern Steel all playing two games each. It will be a big round for the clubs still trying to work their way into the top three with the end of the season quickly approaching.
Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic v. Central Pulse
The Central Pulse have been in hot form throughout the season not dropping a game and given their dominance are looking likely favourites for their match-up against Magic. The past two times the Pulse have won comfortably, but will want to make sure they don’t drop the bundle coming into finals.
It will be an exciting match-up between Magic wing attack Ariana Cable-Dixon and Pulse wing defence Karin Burger who have both been in relatively hot form. Burger is renowned for her hands over pressure, solid body positioning around the circle edge and smothering defensive pressure. But Cable-Dixon has speed to burn, is good on her feet uses the ball well and has good vision making it for an interesting contest.
Aliyah Dunn leads the way in attack for the Pulse with her commanding presence in the goal circle and accuracy. She has proven to be a key cog for the Pulse who funnel the ball through her. But she is not alone with Ameliaranne Ekenasio equally as dominant with her feeds into the circle and ability to turn and shoot making the two a hard duo to beat. They are set to come up against Casey Kopua and Kelly Jury who both apply immense pressure and attack not only the shooter but so too the ball carrier.
Southern Steel v. Northern Mystics
The last time they met the Mystics jumped the Steel and claimed an upset win to get their season rolling. But since then the Southern Steel have been tracking nicely and will want to ensure that they put the Mystics away. However, after a narrow loss last round expect the Northern Mystics to come out firing searching for their third win of the season.
Goal shooter, Lenize Potgieter has grown in stature and ability over the season making her a real threat in the Steel attacking end credit to her accuracy and volume. Potgieter has added a few strings to her bow becoming a more moving target while also showcasing her ability to hold space. Her work with partner in crime Te Paea Selby-Rickit has also rapidly increased throughout their 2019 campaign making them an ominous threat to the Mystics defenders. But the Mystics have classy players in the backend with Michaela Sokolich-Beatson and Erena Mikaere strong both in the air and at ground level.
Grace Nweke has proven to be a revelation in goals for the Northern Mystics with her impressive ability to dominate in the circle. She has strong hands on the take and is accurate under the post using her athleticism to win the ball and outmuscle her opponents. But if Steel defenders’ Te Huinga Selby-Rickit and Abby Erwood can stop Nweke they will be able to limit their scoring power.
Mainland Tactix v. Northern Stars
The Northern Stars finally got back onto the winner’s list after four straight losses and will be wanting to continue that form in hope to secure a spot in the finals. But the Mainland Tactix were handed a big defeat last week and will want to finish the season on a high.
It will be a battle of the goal shooters with both sides gifted with prolific goalers. The Tactix will be looking to 194cm shooter Ellie Bird who can hold her space, read the play well and most importantly convert under the post. She is averaging a whopping 90 percent shooting accuracy throughout the season and if she can maintain that consistency to post she could pose a threat. For the Stars, Maia Wilson is one to watch with her ability to turn and shoot second to none. Her clever footwork in the circle, volume, accuracy and general netball nous is a key feature of her game making her hard to stop when is on song.
Another exciting battle will be between the centres for both sides with the Tactix relying on the speed of Kimiora Poi while the Stars will look to the experience of Temepara Bailey to steady the ship. Both centres offer very different game styles to their respective sides with Bailey oozing more composure and precision with ball in hand compared to Poi who utilizes her speed and agility to open up the game.
Southern Steel v. Central Pulse
In their second game of the round the Central Pulse will be looking to continue their undefeated run and ensure that they have top spot all sown up. meanwhile the Steel will be hoping they could cause an upset and put pressure on the premiership fancies.
If the Southern Steel can get on top of Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Aliyah Dunn early they may be able to crack the code and claim their first win against the side this season. But it will take a huge effort from the defensive trio of Te Huinga Selby-Rickit, Abbey Erwood and Courtney Elliott to stop the avenue to goal and ultimately influence their accuracy under the post.
The contest between Pulse defenders Karin Burger, Sulu Fitzpatrick and Katrina Rore will help to determine whether or not the Steel are able to penetrate through their attack end. The Steel have some stars in the goal circle with both Lenize Potgieter and Te Paea Selby-Rickit able to impact the scoreboard but if they are well held by the Pulse defensive trio it could spell trouble.
Northern Mystics v. Mainland Tactix
With the end of the season quickly approaching the Northern Mystics will be hoping to add another win on the board, while the Tactix will be trying to stay in the hunt for a chance in the finals.
The Northern Mystics are spoilt for choice in the attack end with Tayla Earle, Emma Iversen and Elisapeta Toeava all solid contributors in feeding the ball into the circle. All three can hit the circle edge hard and use their agility to move the ball into damaging positions in the goal circle. The Tactix midcourt also have some handy additions across the court with Kimiora Poi and Samon Nathan both tactical and cautious with ball in hand making for an exciting contest.
It will be a huge match-up between Tactix goal keeper Jane Watson and Mystics shooting sensation Grace Nweke who has been prolific under the post in the last couple of rounds. Watson will have to pull out all the tricks in the book to stop Nweke who uses her athleticism to her advantage, bringing in the high ball and making the most of her shooting opportunities.
