AFTER much hype, the Australian Diamonds have finally revealed their 12-player squad and three travelling reserves is for next month’s Netball World Cup.
Led once again by skipper Liz Watson and vice-captain Steph Wood, there are ultimately not too many changes from the Quad Series winning side from earlier in the year.
Ash Brazill’s netball career is not quite done yet, with the midcourter among the playing 12 off to Cape Town next month.mJamie-Lee Price has made the squad, with the midcourter preferred over Kate Moloney, who is going as a travelling reserve.
Sophie Garbin also made the squad, with her experience and connection with the fellow shooters in the squad at international level favoured over Donnell Wallam, who will still be travelling over but as the travelling reserve.
Ruby Bakewell-Doran is the third travelling reserve, with Sunday Aryang, Courtney Bruce, Sarah Klau and Jo Weston all favoured ahead of her.
Of the larger initial squad revealed a few weeks ago, Sophie Dwyer, Matilda Garrett, Amy Parmenter and Maddy Proud are the ones who have missed out on the final squad.
Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich noted how tough the selection process was.
“We have incredible strength and depth in our squad, which is a credit to each player’s ability to perform in both the Diamonds program and the Suncorp Super Netball League,” she said.
“We are confident we have the versatility across our combinations, and I’m excited by the variations we can put out on the court in Cape Town.
“We have been building towards the 2023 Netball World Cup and we look forward to the challenge of taking on the world’s best.”
