Countdown: Top 15 SSN debutants #14

IT has been a big year of Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) that saw a host of new faces enter the league. While many may have been elevated training partners due to the extended bench there are a couple of players who made their long-awaited SSN debut with one boasting international experience. Draft Central has composed a countdown of the Top 15 SSN debutants for 2020 and coming in at number 14 is Binnian Hunt.

A young up-and-coming goaler with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, Hunt may not have had as much court time as others on this list but showcased some fine skills when she did, with the versatile attacker splitting her limited court time in goal attack and wing attack in patches. With clean footwork and an ability to turn to a defensive mindset in a split-second, Hunt uses her speed to impact both on and off the ball and offer an option where required. Benefiting off the netball nous of the likes of Steph WoodLaura Scherian and Laura Langman over the past few seasons, the attacker has developed her craft well and uses her height and athleticism to create opportunities out the front.

Hunt is both strong on the hold and on the drive, able to adapt for what is required of her within the goal circle. While she did not have a heap of court time out in goal attack purely due to the wealth of talent holding down the starting positions, she showcased her zippy footwork and agility to not only position well in the circle but also put a couple of goals up. Injected as an impact player in wing attack on occasion, Hunt tallied 23 feeds, 18 goal assists and 18 centre pass receives from her five appearances, able to sight Wood, Cara Koenen and Peace Proscovia at the post consistently. Her height and footspeed allowed her to burst out of the blocks at the centre pass, matching well with some of the taller defenders, and using her strong build to contest the ball well.

While Hunt did not play a heap of games, let alone have a wealth of game time, it was her ability to jump on and play her role right away that really showcased her ability this season. She well and truly took advantage of very opportunity that came her way, picking up an intercept and just six turnovers throughout her time on court – a pretty solid stat for a first year player who had limited chances to prove her skill. While Sunshine Coast Lightning was sometimes criticised for having a lack of bench depth, the goal circle was one place where there were plenty of names who could step on. This certainly made it difficult for the young gun to get court time, although her development was evident when she did take the court, and do not be surprised if she makes it back out there next season.
