Five players to watch: ANZ Premiership 2025

LIKE many others in the netballing world, the stars of the ANZ Premiership are racing towards the new season, with plenty of players and storylines to keep an eye on ahead of the upcoming season. From new players to familiar faces at new homes, here are five players to keep an eye on in 2025.
Donnell Wallam
Club: Northern Mystics
Position: Goal Shooter
It is the dawn of a new era for the star shooter. After leaving the Queensland Firebirds at the end of the 2024 season, she finds herself across the ditch and joining an exclusive club of players who have played in the top three domestic leagues (Australia, England and New Zealand). It will not be surprising if she plays a similar role at the Mystics as she did at the Firebirds, but how she slots into her new team and into the New Zealand style of play will be interesting to watch.
Peta Toeava
Club: Northern Mystics
Position: Wing Attack
The number one feeder in the competition last season, Toeava’s partnership with now ex-Mystics shooter Grace Nweke was world renowned. Now teaming up with the aforementioned Wallam, Toeava will need to adapt to the way the Australian plays. However given Wallam is not afraid to share the scoring with a goal attack, Toeava may have to lift her feeding game even further as she will be feeding both Wallam and Filda Vui in the circle, instead of Vui acting as more of a second feeder like she has in previous seasons.
Carys Stythe
Club: Southern Steel
Position: Goal Keeper/Goal Defence
From a couple of new Mystics to a former one, defender Stythe has made the move south to join the Southern Steel for 2025. For the last few years, Stythe has been the youngster in the Mystics’ defence, but will likely get more responsibility at her new club given her experience as the only current international player from the Steel’s defensive cohort. The key watch will be how Stythe adapts to both her new team and the added leadership responsibilities despite being as much as six years younger than her peers.
Charlie Bell
Club: Northern Stars
Position: Goal Shooter
Bell is no stranger to the ANZ Premiership, having made an appearance there last season for Mainland Tactix as an injury replacement player. However this time around she has a permanent spot after signing with the Stars. This will be a big jump for Bell after being a training partner back in Australia for the past several seasons.
She will be one to watch because not only does she need to adapt to a new team and a new style of netball, but also potentially a new position. With the vastly more experienced goal shooter Maia Wilson already at the club, the question will be which circle shooting role Bell will play at the Stars in 2025.
Remi Kamo
Club: Northern Stars
Position: Goal Defence/Goal Keeper
Kamo is another ex-Firebird who has landed in New Zealand following an unpleasant unceremonious exit from the club at the end of 2024. Already an established defender in her own right, Kamo will be looking to put what she described to the ABC as “toxic culture”, along with the personal feeling of being “disempowered” at the Firebirds behind her. She’ll team up with the likes of Kate Burley to make an impact for the Stars as they look to take that next step in 2025.
