GIANTS stomp Lightning in SSN victory

GIANTS Netball have put on a show on the road, smashing the Sunshine Coast Lightning 82 to 54.

The Lightning were dealt a blow before the opening centre pass, with Cara Koenen ruled out due to Health and Safety protocols, and it proved telling.

It was goal for goal for the opening couple of minutes, before the GIANTS pounced on a Lightning shot that went too long and pinched a goal from the Lightning centre pass.

The Lightning then pinched one back off a GIANTS centre pass to level things back up again a couple of minutes later.

The Lightning built a lead before the GIANTS rallied late and took control of the match.

At the first change the visitors held a six goal lead.

The second term however, was where things started to fall about a bit for the Lightning.

The GIANTS continued to be the more dominant side in the second term, and also extended their lead out to as much as nine goals in the opening five minutes.

Their lead kept growing from there, and got out to as much as 13 during the middle five minutes of the quarter.

The Lightning shooters were for the most part making the most of the opportunities they had, but those opportunities were just so hard to come by.

A couple of super shots helped the Lightning bring it back to nine, but the GIANTS then extended their lead back out again. At half time the margin was back at 13.

Things did not get any easier for the home side in the third term as the GIANTS continued to play excellent netball and keep piling on the pressure.

Their ball speed coming down the court was exceptional, and they made it look easy at times.

There was a flurry of super shots from both sides towards the back end of the term, and depending on who you supported it was fortunately or unfortunately mostly the GIANTS shooters nailing them.

The GIANTS won the term 26 to 14, and as the teams turned for home the margin sat at a massive 25 goals.

It was a mere procession for the GIANTS in the final term. They were too strong for the GIANTS and ultimately ran out the winners.

They also equalled the league’s scoring record in the process, and at the same time became the third team to reach the mark against the Lightning this season.

For the GIANTS, shooters Jo Harten and Sophie Dwyer were on song under the ring. Particularly Dwyer, who shot an impressive eight super shots at 100 per cent.

Meanwhile for the Lightning, Laura Scherian worked hard all game, finishing with 221 goal assists, 19 centre pass receives and a whopping 40 feeds.

Next week sees the Lightning at home again to face the Thunderbirds, while the GIANTS are also at home, but they have the second edition of the NSW derby for this season.
