THE squads lists for the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball Season have been confirmed, and fans can finally look forward to the season ahead.
However, some teams have made some signings that leave questions about the makeup of their starting sevens. One of those is the West Coast Fever, specifically the defensive cohort of the Fever.
After the departure of first choice goal keeper Courtney Bruce and fellow defender Kim Jenner, the Fever have replaced them with two international level defenders to team up with Sunday Aryang – Fran Williams and Kadie-Ann Dehaney.
So, this leaves Dan Ryan with a bit of a dilemma when it comes to his starting defenders. But which way will he go? Let us assess all the realistic potential options.
Option 1 – Dehaney at GK, Aryang at GD
Option 1 may be used in the instance that Williams needs time to adjust to the pace and tempo of the SSN, and in that instance they would use the height and reach of Dehaney at goal keeper with Aryang out the front.
While this combination gives them the height boost of Dehaney, that is at the expense of the speed and agility boost of Williams.
Option 2 – Dehaney at GK, Williams at GD
This combination may be used in the instance that the Fever are up against a particularly tall shooting combination, as Aryang is the shortest of the three defenders.
While this combination gives them the height boost of Dehaney, that is at the expense of the speed and agility boost of Aryang.
Option 3 – Williams at GK, Aryang at GD
This combination may be used in the instance that height is not the top factor to counter, but speed and agility are the more important determining factors.
Although this does not give the Fever the height boost of Dehaney, this is the combination that best fits the Fever’s game style.
Option 4 – Dehaney at GK, Williams at GD, Aryang at WD
Option 4 is pretty simple in that they are all on court once, with Aryang pushed out to wing defence, which she has played a few times.
This is an option, but would mean Jess Anstiss is not playing or has had to move to centre or the bench, which is also not 100% positive because Anstiss is a really strong wing defence.
