One fortnight left, but much yet to be determined in SSN

THERE is only a fortnight left of the Suncorp Super Netball season, but still so much to play out. The finals race is just getting tighter and tighter, and this weekend’s games may ultimately decide who makes that final four.

Queensland Firebirds vs GIANTS Netball
Saturday at 5pm local time
Nissan Arena

This clash is an intriguing one, with the potential for it to go either way.

Both teams are coming off confidence boosting wins last week as well, particularly the Firebirds who beat the Fever in Perth, which is a huge achievement.

This game definitely has more riding on it for the Firebirds, who are among a pack of teams all equal on the same number of wins, chasing one of those last two spots in the finals. They also cannot afford to drop either of their last two games, so expect some intensity from the Firebirds.

It’s also an important game for the GIANTS, who although are a game ahead of that chasing pack, cannot afford to rest on their laurels just yet.

Adelaide Thunderbirds vs Melbourne Vixens
Saturday at 6:30pm local time
Adelaide Entertainment Centre

This one really is do or die for the Thunderbirds.

Like the Firebirds, they are in that chasing pack all equal on wins that is fighting for one of those last few finals spots. Lose this one, and they can probably kiss their finals hopes goodbye.

They certainly have a daunting task ahead of them, trying to topple the ladder leading Vixens, but the fact that it is in Adelaide will certainly help.

For the Vixens on the other hand, they have a very different set of objectives heading into the match. They are looking to secure top spot and the finals advantage that comes with that, and if they win this one top spot is all theirs, no one can catch them.

NSW Swifts vs West Coast Fever
Sunday at 2pm local time
Ken Rosewall Arena

This is a spicier clash on paper than it was before last weekend’s round.

Both of these teams are coming off losses, and both teams will have been frustrated with how they performed.

The Swifts had a chance to draw level with the GIANTS on the ladder and have that buffer over the chasing pack, but blew the lead they had against Collingwood, while the Fever were outclassed by the Firebirds at home.

There is certainly more riding on this clash for the Swifts then the Fever, and the Swifts may smell a whiff of an opportunity here. They now have three blueprints of how to beat the Fever, and the Fever did lose the last time they ventured to the Harbor City.

Sunshine Coast Lightning vs Collingwood Magpies
Sunday at 4pm local time
USC Stadium

These two may be the bottom two sides on the ladder currently, but if this season has taught us nothing else, it is that ladder positions often mean absolutely nothing.

The Lightning’s season may already have a definitive end for a fortnight’s time, but they are going to be determined to finish the season strong and build into next season.

Collingwood, on the other hand is among that chasing pack all equal on wins, so another victory here is a must for the Magpies.

Last time these two sides met Collingwood prevailed for its first win of the season, so will the Magpies win again and keep their season alive heading into the final round? Time will tell.
