Players to watch: Pool F

WITH things heating up in the Netball World Cup we have chosen one key player from each country in Pool F that has caught our eye throughout the competition so far.

Australia: Kelsey Browne

The dynamic wing attack has been in blistering form for the Diamonds with her speed causing all sorts of havoc for the opposition defence. Her incredible footwork and impeccable timing makes her hard to stop when on song with her ability to weave her way through zones and hit the circle edge with pace. Her well weighted passes and adaptability to feed into a variety of shooters makes her exciting to watch. Browne’s general netball smarts to create leads and space in the attacking third is second to none with the Diamond well and truly hitting her straps at the right part of the year.

New Zealand: Karin Burger

The talented Silver Ferns defender has shown her versatility and sheer defensive strength to win the ball around the circle edge with her long arms and impressive reach. Her general netball smarts to work the angles and block easy avenue to goal for the opposition wing attack is second to none, well and truly covering their second phase play. Though her defensive efforts are strong her ability to transition the ball down the court and attacking flair is also important for the Ferns who relish her drive through the midcourt. Her read of the flight of the ball and cleanliness also allows her to apply good pressure for long periods of time forcing her opposition into creating turnovers.

Malawi: Joyce Mvula

Mvula has been a shining light for Malawi with her strength under the post and clever movement allowing her to edge closer to the ring and pose a greater threat for the Queens. The holding goal shooter has proven that accuracy is no issue finding the net time and time again credit to her silky footwork and quick hands to offload and reposition.

Barbados: Shonica Wharton

Wharton has been a game changer for Barbados with her ability to turn and shoot from anywhere in the circle. The relatively unknown goal shooter has stood up throughout the World Cup commanding the ball and converting when she gets the chance. Her unfazed nature and cleanliness with ball in hand is impressive while her careful footwork makes her an imminent threat for any opposition.

Northern Ireland: Caroline O’Hanlon

Northern Ireland captain, Caroline O’Hanlon has been the engine room for the Warriors credit to her gut running and class with ball in hand to pierce through opposition defence. Her ability to hit the circle edge with ease and use her footwork to dodge players is second to none. Though she may not be the fastest player on court what she lacks in pace she makes up for in ball placement and creativity to deliver well weighted passes into her shooters.

Zimbabwe: Joice Takaidza

Takaidza has taken the competition by storm leading Zimbabwe to two wins’ credit to her strength under the post and understanding with teammates out the front to feed the ball well into her. The goal shooter has shown she can take control of the game commanding the ball and posing a dominant threat holding strong and getting on the move when necessary. Her clever footwork allows her to inch closer to the post while accuracy does not seem to be a problem for her.
