AFTER an entertaining and at times unpredictable home and away season, it is now time for the finals series of the Victorian Netball League.
Four teams are all that are left in contention to win the title – City West Falcons, Boroondara Express, Hawks and the North East Blaze.
Coming into this three week finals series, the team to beat is definitely the Falcons. They only lost the one match all season and finished with a percentage almost 20 per cent better than anyone else.
With the giant shooting circle they have in Jane Cook and Uneeq Palavi, it is not hard to see why they have been so successful again this season.
However, the one team they did lose to this year was tonight’s opponents in the Major Semi Final, the Boroondara Express, in the first Grand Final rematch back in Round 1. But, the Falcons did win the second match up between the sides three and a half months later.
Regardless, Sarah Szczykulski, Sophie Shoebridge and the rest of the Express defenders will certainly have plenty of work to do to contain Cook and Palavi.
Tonight’s other match is a little bit more cutthroat. The Hawks and Blaze meet in a Minor Semi Final, with the loser playing no further part in the finals campaign.
The two previous meetings between the sides this season saw the Blaze win twice, but with a combined margin of just eight goals.
Annabelle Gorman has proven to be a very handy pick up for the Hawks this year, who will partner Kaylia Stanton in goals tonight and look to capitalise on the hard work of the rest of the team’s hard work as much as possible. However, they will have to deal with the strength of the Blaze defence, with Ty Coppinger and Kaitlyn Black not easy opponents to navigate.
