THERE is only three weeks left of the VNL season, and as the week’s tick down, there are some teams who need to get a move on if they want to make finals.
As things sit at the moment, only one team has booked their place in the finals, and that is the City West Falcons. They sit four games ahead of second placed North East Blaze, five games ahead of fourth placed Hawks and seven ahead of fifth placed Geelong.
After that though is where the standings get much tighter.
There are officially seven teams fighting for three spots left in the finals – the Blaze, Boroondara Express, Hawks, the Cougars, Southern Saints, Melbourne Uni and Bendigo. Half of those teams play one of those other seven teams tonight, so the ladder could get a huge shake up after tonight’s matches.
The Express and Strikers face each other tonight in what could be Bendigo’s last chance to keep its finals hopes alive. Bendigo is currently three games behind fourth place, so if they lose tonight and other teams win, that will mean the Strikers can no longer make finals.
The other two in this group that are playing each other tonight are Geelong and the North East Blaze.
This is a clash between second and fifth, with a two game gap between the two.
If the Blaze win tonight they will just about book their ticket to finals, while if Geelong win they keep in touch with the top four, or jump into the top four if other results go their way.
The ones who are not are the Hawks and Melbourne Uni. The Hawks are set to take on the Warriors, while Melbourne Uni has to keep its faints finals hopes alive against the competition front runners the Falcons.
There is also one match happening on Friday night, with the Peninsula Waves hosting Casey. These two might not be able to make finals, but they will still be wanting to finish 2024 on a high with as many wins as possible.
