PREVIEW | 2025 NSL: Leeds Rhinos

THE 2025 Netball Super League season is a mere fortnight away, and in the lead up to the competition, Rookie Me Central will be previewing each of the teams and taking a look at how they might go in this new era of English netball.

Next up, it is time to take a look at the Leeds Rhinos.

2024 was a year of growth for the Rhinos. They ended up two places higher on the ladder than they did in 2023, and although they still finished four games behind a spot in the finals, they were effectively the best of the rest and improved their goal difference by 107.

Interestingly, in what has become a bit of a habit the Rhinos, there has again been a fair bit of list turnover in the offseason. Only four members of the 2024 squad remain in Harriet Jones, Joyce Mvula, Geva Mentor and Cassie Howard.

The section of the court that has seen the least amount of change is the shooting end, with the first choice combination of Jones and Mvula continuing on this season. They will be assisted by emerging Rose Sophie Egbaran, who is making the step up to Super League for the first time.

The most interesting area of the court to watch for the Rhinos though will be the midcourt. Howard is the only returning midcourter from last year, and will be joined this year by former Storm player Beth Brittain, former-Star Ash Dekker, and Rosie Harris, who is making a return to the Rhinos this year after a year away at the Storm.

It will be a big year for Brittain, who is not only at a new club but has been named the captain of the side for this year.

However the Rhinos have a huge hole of presence to fill this season after Caroline O’Hanlon seemingly retired at the end of last season. She was one of the Rhinos’ most important players last season and this year’s midcourters will have to really lift to fill the hole of volume left by O’Hanlon’s departure.

When it comes to the defence, Mentor will again be playing a bit of a leadership role this year, as she is significantly more experienced than her fellow defenders Ella Bowen and Jess Haynes.
