Preview: Australian Netball Championships 2022

It is the eve of the 2022 Australian Netball Championships (ANC). The redesigned format to replace the old Australian Netball League (ANL) was supposed to begin in 2020, but after a Covid induced two year hiatus, the redesigned national second tier competition is back.

A total of 10 teams from across the country will be facing off in Traralgon this week in a week long tournament for the title.

The way that the tournament will work is that the teams have effectively been split into two groups, and so will play each of their other pool members once to establish a pool ladder, with a finals system to follow suit. You can check out the full fixture here:

Many of the teams are tied to the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) teams, but others like the Capital Darters and Tasmania are not, and are instead representing whole states or territories.

Because 2022 is the debut year of the new format and the ANL’s last year three years ago, it is awfully hard to gauge who the favourites and likely top sides will be. The Vic Fury are the most star studded of the line ups, with only a small minority their side not either current SSN players or training partners, but the West Coast Fever Reserves have former Diamond Nat Medhurst in their side.

Most of the sides, the ones that are linked to SSN clubs, have chosen to include some or all of their training partners from the 2022 season, and some have chosen to include contracted players from 2022.

This means fans will get to see the likes of Ruby Barkmeyer, Emma Cosh, Matilda Garrett and many others they would have seen grace the court at SSN level this year.

But there are plenty others, including Collingwood’s Jane Cook, the Capital Darters’ Taylah Davies and GIANTS Academy’s Emily Moore, did not get that kind of opportunity this year so these Championships are the perfect opportunity for them to show SSN coaches what they are capable of.

Check out the Team by Team previews below, and tune in to Kayo Freebies this week for an excellent week of the next generation of netball.
