PREVIEW | VNL Round 7 2024: Top teams lock horns

OFF the back of an exciting National Netball Championships, the VNL returns to the spotlight tonight.

The round’s opening match looms as a one-sided affair, as the Peninsula Waves take on City West Falcons.

On one hand, the Waves have found the going tough all season, meanwhile the reigning champions are in a good run of form after their initial stumble.

The next three games on the fixture promise to deliver much more hotly contested battles, though.

The first of them will see the North East Blaze and Hawks clash in an all top four affair. As two sides who have been around a similar mark for a few years now, both teams will be looking to take the next step this season and really make a mark on the competition.

Match number two is between the Express and Cougars.

The Express are one of the last sides to remain undefeated, but come up against a Cougars side who will be fired up after a loss last weekend. Percentage will also be important for both sides so they will be hoping to win and win big.

Melbourne Uni and the Southern Saints lock horns in the third of this trio of matches.

Currently sixth and seventh on the ladder, 2.39 per cent is all that splits these sides on the ladder, so not only will the win be important to stay in touch with the top half of the ladder, but so will any percentage they can gain.

Tonight’s final match is a battle of the newbies, with the Western Warriors set to battle the Bendigo Strikers.

This game is an intriguing one because it could have a massive impact ladder wise on the teams around them. For example, despite being 10th on the ladder, the Strikers actually have the sixth best percentage in the league, so even just one win could make all the difference.

This week’s team with the bye is Casey, who have the perfect opportunity for a bit of a reset after a less than ideal start to the season.
