SSN announces 2022 signing period

WITH speculation about Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) 2022 player signings running rampant over the past few days, the SSN has now confirmed the sign and trade period following the league’s landmark pay deal heading into next season. It is safe to say that huge moves are expected across the board given no players could be pre-signed to their 2021 clubs before now, with both one or two year contracts on the table this time around.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the key dates and information to know.

Re-signing period:

Monday, September 6

  • Clubs have exclusive opportunity to re-sign existing squad members
  • Clubs may reach out to players not contracted to SSN in 2021
  • Conversations may begin with players from opposition teams

This includes any existing permanent or temporary replacement players, or choose to elevate an existing training partner from the 2021 season, with one or two-year deals on the table. Intriguing, this also includes any players who were not contracted to another SSN club in 2021, giving teams a chance to headhunt international or developing talent. Clubs are allowed to have conversations with players – including permanent, temporary or training partner – from opposition teams, but are not allowed to make contractual obligations until the trade period, which begins the following week.

Free agency/trade period:

Monday, September 13 to Friday, October 8

  • Contract signings outside existing squad may begin
  • All 10 2022 squad-members must be contracted by October 8

The free agency/trade period is set to begin next Monday, with all 10 squad-members required to be contracted by October 8. The key to this period is that clubs have only the one week to re-sign existing squad-members, meaning the free agency period is set to be cut throat as clubs look to pounce on unconfirmed top talent.

Training partners:

Saturday, October 9

  • Training partners may be signed
  • 2022 signings only

Following the end of the free agency period, training partners may be signed, only for the upcoming 2022 season. The training partner signing period is ongoing, with clubs allowed to elevate players to their training partner list over the off-season and  into the 2022 season.
