IN each round we will identify one key match-up, provide an in-depth analysis of both players and compare the two styles.
WEST COAST FEVER v. NSW SWIFTS
Jhaniele Fowler (GS) v. Sarah Klau (GK)
With both players coming off the Netball World Cup but having not played each other in the tournament, they will want to assert their dominance in Suncorp Super Netball and hopefully forge their team ahead. The Swifts were in ripping form before the mid-season break while the Fever struggled for consistency, meaning this match could be a make or break for both teams as they look for some consistency post-World Cup.
The Jamaican shooting machine hardly ever puts a foot wrong with her composure and height a real asset of her game. She seems unphased by the physical nature of the game and thrives on the high intensity of each match. Jhaniele Fowler is the most prolific shooter in the competition, backing up her efforts each and every week and showcasing her sheer aerial strength to outmuscle any opponent in the circle. Her long split allows her to edge closer to the post while her accuracy under the ring is second to none, making the most of her opportunities. Although the shooting load solely relies on her, Fowler consistently displays a sense of calmness using the space well and commanding the ball when in position.
After her debut appearance for the Diamonds, Sarah Klau will be hoping to emulate her hot form back on the home soil for the Swifts. The tenacious defender has shown that she is not afraid to have a crack at every ball that goes flying past, credit to her ability to read the play and impact on the contest. Her quick feet, aerial leap and lean over the shot could also cause havoc against Fowler, despite standing almost 10 centimetres shorter. The Swifts goal keeper will need help from fellow defender Maddy Turner, Sophie Halpin and injury replacement player Kayla Cullen to clog up space and cause confusion across the court while also pushing her right to the baseline in the hope to create turnovers.
If Klau can get on top of Fowler early it will go a long way in denying easy access into the circle for Fever and claiming victory. The goal keeper must challenge Fowler with every pass and push her out wide to stop the ease in which Fowler can score with, if the Swifts are any chance to win.
