SSN Head to Head: Round 8

IN each round we will identify one key match-up and provide an in-depth analysis of both players and compare the two styles.

NSW Swifts v. GWS GIANTS

SARAH KLAU (GK) v. CAITLIN BASSETT (GS)

It will be an exciting match-up between the two Diamonds players. The Swifts have been in undeniably the best form of any team in the competition while the GIANTS will be looking for redemption after a disappointing draw in Round 8.

Sarah Klau has gone from strength to strength this season, earning herself a call-up to the international squad. Her classy footwork, read of the play and ability to get cleanly around the body of her opponent makes her a key player for the Swifts, winning a heap of the ball and propelling it forward. Her hands over pressure and defensive intent is immense, while her strong partnership with Maddy Turner and Kate Eddy gives her the freedom to go out hunting and pick off the loose ball, making her a constant threat.

In the first few rounds Caitlin Bassett struggled to find her feet but as the season has gone on she has posed a dominant threat. There is no denying her ability to turn and shoot quickly, making her an asset for the GIANTS in attack. Her volume and accuracy to post makes her near on impossible to stop when she is on song and with Kim Green and Jamie-Lee Price out the front she is getting silver service under the post. Bassett oozes strength and class to position well under the post and command the ball and her connection with Jo Harten is increasing week in and week out, making them a damaging duo. She uses her body well to create angles for the feeders to pass the ball in with ease. The towering goal shooter has added a few more strings to her bow this season, moving around the circle more and occasionally coming out to allow Harten to drive in.

Klau has been in hot form as of late making for an intriguing battle. Though Klau is relatively inexperienced in comparison to Bassett, the Swifts’ defensive combination will go a long way in helping to shut down the GIANTS goal shooter. If Bassett is able to find good space and her connections out the front are on early it could allow the GIANTS to push ahead and claim the win.
