IN each round we will identify one key match-up, provide an in-depth analysis of both players and compare the two styles. In the minor semi-final we look at the goal circle battle between two international stars.
MELBOURNE VIXENS v. COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES
Caitlin Thwaites (GS) v. Geva Mentor (GK)
After only playing each other last week both players will want to assert themselves early and ensure they win the battle. Former Collingwood goaler Caitlin Thwaites will want to capitalise while Geva Mentor has been in vintage form making for yet another tense battle.
The goal shooter has a plethora of skills, able to change up her game style with ease credit to her netball smarts. Thwaites can shoot from anywhere in the circle and has confidence to boot thanks to her accurate and textbook shooting style. Her ability to hold strong while also get on the move makes her a damaging prospect for the Magpies defenders. Although she was relatively well held last round her consistency is second to none, able to continuously re-offer under the post and provide a viable option in the circle. Her connection with fellow goaler Tegan Philip is hard to stop when on song given their ability to open up space, drive hard into the circle and spread the scoring load. Thwaites is renowned for her silky footwork, strength to outmuscle defenders and claim prime position in the goal circle.
Mentor has sparked the Magpies defensive unit in recent weeks with her intent and smothering pressure. Her sheer ability to inject herself into the game and create doubt into her opponent’s mind is second to none and more importantly allows her to cherry pick passes. Her ability to read the flight of the ball and use her speed and decision making to impact the play is a key element in the Magpies recent success. Her ever growing connection with April Brandley, Kim Ravaillion and Ash Brazill out the front allows Mentor to execute her defensive setups and wreak havoc down back. Mentor has an uncanny ability to time the moment perfect and pull off the unthinkable with a goal-saving deflection or intercept.
Both players know each other’s game extremely well and have plenty of experience, making for an exciting duel. Although Thwaites’ radar has been slightly off in the past couple of weeks with the likes of Liz Watson and Kate Moloney hesitating to deliver the ball into her on the hold, if they can execute that from the first whistle the Vixens will be able to set the tone. If Mentor can deny access into the circle and cause confusion she will be able to limit Thwaites’ influence under the post.
