SSN Player Focus: Jhaniele Fowler (West Coast Fever)

WE are only two rounds into the 2022 Super Netball season, but already there is one shooter having a dominant start to her campaign – West Coast Fever goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler.

She currently leads the scoring tally by 30 goals, and has only missed five shots for the entire season this far.

In Round 1, she was dominant against the Sunshine Coast Lightning, and almost broke her own single game goals scored record.

She completely outplayed Lightning keeper Kadie-Ann Dehaney, and used her height to her full advantage. There is only six centimetres difference between Dehaney and Fowler, but with the way that Fowler was dominating, people would be forgiven for thinking the gap was much bigger.

The biggest strength to Fowler’s game is her bodywork. She’s a strong player, so she can easily out-body her opponent and receive the pass in and take the shot.

Her height is also a huge advantage to her. She is almost two metres tall, and so towers over most, if not all defenders she encounters. This is a huge facet for the Fever because they can use lob passes into Fowler and they are more effective than they would be with many other shooters in the league.

Although Fowler does not venture far out of the circle very often, she does not need to. With either Sasha Glasgow or Alice Teague-Neeld in the Goal Attack role, they provide that link between the mid court and the circle so Fowler does not have to. Fowler is also much more effective under the ring, so the Fever can afford to keep her where she is most useful.

Although Fowler is not a big super shot shooter, again she does not need to be. She is so accurate under the ring that it is more useful to have her accurately shooting non super shots then have her attempting from range and missing.

She has proven to be quite the headache for opposition defenders already this season, but those teams have also given the others a blueprint for how to potentially counter her. If the defender is able to cut off the lob passes in and can out-body Fowler somehow, then that will go a long way to countering her influence. Time will tell if any of the sides who are yet to play the Fever are able to pull it off though.
