SSN Player focus: Shimona Nelson

WHILE the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) might be done and dusted for 2019, we will review a number of talented players who stepped up this year and take a look at just what they have to offer and how they can improve further.

Shimona Nelson

DOB. 01/12/1998
Height: 197cm
Position: GS

Season overview:

The Jamaican goal shooter took her game to a whole new level in 2019 after making the switch from the Adelaide Thunderbirds to the Magpies. Shimona Nelson was a lynchpin in attack for Collingwood and was a key contributor to their finals burst.

Assets:

Nelson is highly impressive in the air displaying her leap to get up high and reign the ball in seamlessly. Yet to turn 21, the goal shooter has come a long way in 2019 with her confidence growing and general netball nous developing to become a more imposing figure in the goal circle. She has a bright future thanks to her dynamic movement and scoring prowess able to post high numbers under the post and do so relatively accurately. While her height is a key feature of her game able to command the ball under the post, her read of play and connection with Nat Medhurst allows her to setup and hold strongly under the post.

Improvements:

Although she has steadily worked on her hands and ability to reel in passes while under pressure she will need to continue to develop that aspect of her game to have an influence at Suncorp Super Netball level. The young shooter can go missing at times throughout big games and will need to work on putting out a four quarter performance on a more consistent basis. While she has proven that she can be prolific from under the post her range is not extensive unable to shoot from the outskirts of the goal circle an area that will need to be addressed.
