WITH only three rounds left for the home and season we cast an eye over the stats leaders across the court. It is no surprise Jamaican recruit Shamera Sterling features heavily credit to her defensive prowess while the likes of Jhaniele Fowler also secured top spot in a couple of categories.
Rebounds offensive: Caitlin Bassett – GIANTS (39)
The Australian Diamonds captain has showcased her sheer strength under the post to gobble up any ball that pops out of the ring. The tall goal shooter has made her presence felt in the goal circle with her long reach and clever positioning to stand strong under the post and reel in any stray shots making her a huge asset for the GIANTS in season 2019. In close second is youngster Sasha Glasgow who has been a revelation for the Adelaide Thunderbirds with 32 offensive rebounds.
Rebounds defensive: Shamera Sterling – Adelaide Thunderbirds (29)
The Jamaican international has consistently displayed her ability to regain possession for her side with her strength and athleticism to get over the top of players cleanly and come up with possession. Her elevation and ability to get two hands to ball makes her hard to stop while Geva Mentor is not far behind with 27 rebounds for the season.
Goal assists: Liz Watson – Melbourne Vixens (316)
The Melbourne Vixens wing attack is in a league of her own. She has found good space throughout the season and used the ball well delivering pin point passes into the circle time and time again. Her ability to read the play, vary her passes and hit the circle edge with precision and pace is second to none making her an integral member in the Vixens line-up. The next closest is Kelsey Browne who has racked up 227 goal assists for the season showcasing her worth to the Magpies. However, Watson has a whopping 89 more assists than Browne highlighting her sheer strength and ability to control games with her passes into the circle.
Centre pass receives: Laura Scherian – Sunshine Coast Lightning (308)
Sunshine Coast Lightning wing attack Laura Scherian has relished the reduced work load this season perfecting her craft in the attacking third and working hard at the transverse line to bring the ball down the court. Scherian does a wealth of work at the centre pass to receive the ball and set up attacking forays for her side highlighting her attacking mentality. Watson is hot on her heels in second spot with 276 centre pass receives showcasing her work across the court.
Goals: Jhaniele Fowler – West Coast Fever (547)
The Jamaican recruit has not put a foot wrong throughout 2019 well and truly steering the ship for the Fever with accuracy to post. She averages 50 goals a game credit to her sheer strength under the post, aerial skill to reel passes in and clever footwork to stay within her shooting zone. Fowler is unstoppable when on song using her height and long split to full advantage throughout the season. Shimona Nelson is ranked second on the ladder but there is a massive gap separating the two with 89 goals the difference highlighting Fowler’s complete dominance over the competition.
Goal attempts: Jhaniele Fowler – West Coast Fever (576)
With Fowler leading the goal scoring stat it is no surprise that she is also ranked number one for goal attempts with 576. The West Coast Fever shooter is accurate to post at 95 per cent for the year showcasing her proficiency and volume. Nelson also took out second spot for goal attempts with 527 but at a much lower percentage than Fowler.
Deflections: Shamera Sterling – Adelaide Thunderbirds (98)
The Adelaide Thunderbirds goal keeper has well and truly stamped her authority on the competition with her defensive prowess, timing and read of the play. The 23-year-old defender has showcased time and time again her aerial skill to contest high balls while her acceleration has also been a feature of her game allowing her to get hands to ball. West Coast Fever keeper Courtney Bruce is currently second on the ladder for deflections with 69 despite missing a couple of games through injury.
Intercepts: Shamera Sterling – Adelaide Thunderbirds (50)
Shamera Sterling has claimed first spot on the intercepts leaderboard with 50 and with three rounds to go could quite easily add to that tally. Her timing and ability to contest both from behind and in front makes her an imposing threat for all other teams. Karla Pretorius is hot on her tail with 49 intercepts for the year credit to her ability to pick pocket her opponents and speed off the mark.
