St Therese triumph over Darebin in shortened 17s match
ST THERESE continued its outstanding 17 and Under campaign with a hard-fought 15-goals win over Darebin in a shortened match last Wednesday night. Due to court availability just the one game took place, with the higher ranked St Therese adding more pain to Darebin’s campaign. Surprisingly trailing at quarter time, the favourites hit back in the second term and took control from there, comfortably winning the match, 36-21.
Taking to the court in an earlier timeslot of 6pm with shortened quarters, St Therese were strong favourites against a Darebin side that had just the one win to its name this season. Though St Therese had lost to WDNA, it was still clear of its second placed rival, and looked to extend further in the Round 9 contest. Despite being favourite, things did not go to plan early, as Darebin raced out to a 10-7 lead at quarter time.
Hudson Ebbage scored six goals and Ben Holehouse managed the four to put their side in the box seat. Despite trailing, St Therese held firm on its starting seven, having brought just the eight players into the match, while Darebin had up to 10 players available to rotate. Liam Mason scored eight goals to get off Michael Jones‘ chain from the first quarter, while the defensive combination of Ryan Lovell and Ben Morgan shut down Darebin’s offensive attack.
By half-time, St Therese lead 18-13 and were back on top. Tyson Lowman came on in centre for the third term as he had started, and seemed to steady the midcourt, while Ebbage’s move to goal defence limited the flow of the St Therese offence. Still, it was a case of not being able to convert chances into scores, as Darebin only managed the three goals. The losing side contained St Therese to just the six goals, but already the deficit had grown to eight goals with a quarter to play.
Alex Thomas came on in wing defence for the final term after playing the first half in wing attack, while Lucas Lablanche pushed up from wing defence into centre. A strong pairing between Mason (seven goals) and Francis (five) resulted in the leaders outscoring their opponents 12-5 in the last quarter to win by 15 goals, 36-21. Lovell was named best-on, with Zachary Vesovic – who was centre for the first three quarters – and Mason also among the best in the win.
