Suncorp Super Netball: Best attack heading into finals

HEADING into finals, Draft Central assess the best attacking unit of the four teams set to take part in the postseason proceedings. When determining the best shooting combinations it will take into consideration elements such as goals for, accuracy, offensive rebounds and attempts across the 14 rounds of Suncorp Super Netball.

#1 West Coast Fever
Boasting arguably the competition’s best goal shooter in Jhaniele Fowler, the Fever have earned themselves the title of best attacking side in the top four. When looking at goals scored there is daylight between West Coast and the next comers in the Swifts with a large chunk of that down to Fowler. The Fever have managed 964 goals throughout the home and away season highlighting their ability to blow teams away, credit to their scoring prowess and the ease with which they can do it. Fowler is a shooting machine and this season has been no different with the Jamaican goaler converting a whopping 795 goals from 848 attempts at 94 per cent. Her offensive rebounding is another important facet reeling in 60 to provide that second chance not only on her own missed shots, but so too that of Alice Teague-Neeld and Kaylia Stanton. West Coast have had one of the most stable shooting combinations out of the top four despite the likes of Teague-Neeld and Stanton occasionally chopping and changing. Teague-Neeld has not been quite so prolific on the scoreboard, managing 78 goals at a mere 55 per cent, but has not had to do much more given Fowler’s prolific nature.

#2 NSW Swifts
Although the Swifts have not reached the heights of 2019 they have proved that they still have plenty of firepower, especially when it comes to attack. Sophie Garbin has further developed her craft throughout the season with her ability to slot into both goal shooter and goal attack seamlessly and put up a wealth of shots thanks to her aerial capabilities. Meanwhile, Sam Wallace has continued her scintillating form with her laid back nature constantly on show but not hindering her ability to go to post and dominate. Helen Housby has had somewhat of an interrupted season but has still proven to be a menace with her smooth movement across the court, spatial awareness and impressive timing to drive along the baseline while her super shot ability has also kept the Swifts in the hunt nailing 37 at 52 per cent. The Swifts sit second overall for points scored with 898, with Wallace proving to be the lynchpin thanks to her hot hand registering 482 goals at 88 per cent while also drawing in 31 rebounds.

#3 Melbourne Vixens
The Melbourne Vixens have a three pronged attack that are all able to accurately and effectively hit the scoreboard. Their increased versatility has been a key reason for their rise up the ladder in 2020 with none of Mwai Kumwenda, Caitlin Thwaites or Tegan Philip featuring in the top five for goals scored, showcasing the shared load between the trio. Boasting the best defensive unit when it comes to the least number of goals scored against them, the Vixens can afford to sit lower down the line in attack managing 870 goals for the season. However, the minor premiers should not be underestimated as the shooters can turn it on in a blink of an eye such is their class. Thwaites has been a revelation out in goal attack, with all of her netball knowledge and precise ball placement on show while her accuracy under the post has not wavered testament to her high calibre skill and game awareness. Kumwenda has solidified her role in at goal shooter, going at 91 per cent and managing 352 goals while Thwaites is the next best for the Vixens with 252 at 86 per cent. Philip has been down on her usual lofty standards but has proven to be an impact player sinking 185 goals, 23 of them super shots.

#4 Sunshine Coast Lightning
Youngster Cara Koenen has taken the next step up this season, so much so she has earned herself a Diamonds call up for her impressive skill in the goal circle. Koenen is an exciting player that is both strong on the hold and on the move credit to her impressive skillset, with accuracy proving to be no issue sitting on 453 goals at 89 per cent along with 35 rebounds. The Lightning have registered the least goals out of the top four teams with 821 to their name, 49 less than the Vixens in third. Scoring has been somewhat of an issue for the Lightning throughout the season, recording their lowest score in SSN history against the Fever. However, that is not to say Sunshine Coast do not have the means to inflict pain with Steph Wood a super shot specialist and Ugandan Peace Proscovia an incredibly handy player to bring onto the court with her body strength and hops both key aspects of her game play.
