Suncorp Super Netball Season Preview: Collingwood Magpies

THE 2023 Suncorp Super Netball Season is only a matter of weeks away, and in anticipation of the new season we here at Rookie Me Central are going to take an in depth look at each of the sides and preview what this year may have in store for them.

Today’s preview is all about the Collingwood Magpies.

Season 2022 was not the smooth season anyone at the Pies would have been hoping for preseason.

They got off to a slow start to the season and combine that with some badly timed Covid outbreaks meant that they certainly faced their challenges come the back end of the season.

However, after being on the favourable side of the percentage battle to make it into the postseason, they played finals for the first time since 2019.

Their finals run may have been short (they bowed out to the Giants in the Minor Semi Final) but considering how their season began, the way it ended is a huge positive.

Looking ahead to 2023, and Collingwood’s squad is really settled. All of its regular starters from last season are back in the black and white dress in 2023, with a few new additions added to the line up to bring a different element to the Magpies’ game.

There are two new faces in total for Collingwood fans to get excited about in 2023.

Maddie Hinchliffe has moved down the east coast from the Sunshine Coast Lightning to Collingwood, and will be looking to make her home in the midcourt alongside the likes of Molly Jovic and Kelsey Browne.

Nyah Allen is the other new face in Collingwood’s squad for 2023, and will be looking to build on what she was able to show in a few appearances in 2022. She is a dynamic shooter who has been a Pies training partner for a few years, and although is out injured at the moment will be keen to repay the faith when given the chance.

The pair replace Gabby Sinclair, who has subsequently moved to the UK and joined the Celtic Dragons, and Maggie Lind, who was not offered a contract for 2023.
